Franz Schubert, born 1797 in Vienna, studied piano and violin as a child. Although he died at an early age of 31, Schubert wrote more than 600 Lieder, nine symphonies, liturgical music, operas, chamber ensembles and solo piano music. Schubert is admired as one of the leading early Romantic era musicians and is still one of the most frequently performed composers.
